Yesterday, Google launched their new mobile site, designed to provide a fully-capable alternative to the Android (and iPhone) YouTube apps, as made very clear by their video demonstration of the subject. The site is HTML5-based, making it fully functional on every Android phone, not only those running 2.2 with Flash. Details and video after the break!
I spent a few minutes with the site earlier, and it is markedly improved over the older mobile site. It maintains the full functionality of the Desktop version while reorganizing it into a touch-friendly package. Tapping a video’s title or thumbnail instantly launches my Droid’s video player, and buffering time was swift and painless. In fact, my only complaint is that the user must select whether or not they want High Quality before they launch the video, and cannot do so from within the player — but this is a side effect of the player being HTML5-based, and so is absolutely understandable. HQ appears to be selected by default, so you may want to keep that in mind and unselect it when you’re not on WiFi.
Perhaps even more interesting than the new mobile site, however, is the music in Google’s demo video, a World Cup-themed ditty that features everyone’s favorite instrument, the vuvuzela.
